UNOFFICIAL Guide to the JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship (Standard)
This is an unofficial guide for both prospective candidates and host researchers,
aimed at sharing practical information and typical timelines for the
JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship (Standard).
Maintained by
Koichi Hamaguchi.
1. Overview: JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship (Standard)
The JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship (Standard) is a national fellowship program
for overseas early-career researchers to conduct research in Japan.
Please make sure to carefully read the official information provided by JSPS:
Note that in the official JSPS documents, the term "applicant" is used to
refer to the host researcher/institution, not the overseas researcher.
In this page, I use the term "candidate" to refer to the prospective
overseas researcher, for clarity.
Key points:
-
The application is submitted by the host researcher/institution,
not by the candidate directly.
-
The selection is made by an anonymous review committee organized by JSPS.
It is therefore not decided by the host researcher.
-
The acceptance rate
is typically around 10%, depending on the year and field.
-
The internal deadlines at host institutions are often much earlier than the official JSPS deadline.
In practice, these internal deadlines are the most important ones,
and missing it means that the application cannot be submitted to JSPS.
-
Both the candidate and the host researcher are required to prepare
a substantial amount of
written material.
Applications are therefore prepared through close communication,
starting at an early stage.
2. Typical timeline (indicative)
The timeline below is intended only as a rough guide, based on typical cases.
Actual schedules, internal deadlines, and procedures vary significantly depending
on the host researcher and institution.
Candidates should always confirm the details directly with their prospective host.
-
FY 2026 - 2nd Recruitment
(Arrival in Japan: September 1 - November 30, 2026)
-
January - February 2026:
Contact and discussions with potential hosts.
-
February - March 2026:
Preparation of application documents in close coordination with the host.
-
Around March 2026:
Internal deadlines at host institutions
(often significantly earlier than the JSPS deadline).
-
April 28, 2026: Application deadline
(submission from host institution to JSPS; for reference).
-
August 2026:
Announcement of selection results by JSPS.
-
September 1 - November 30, 2026:
Arrival in Japan.
-
FY 2027 - 1st Recruitment (to be updated)
As an example, the schedule and procedure when applying with Koichi Hamaguchi as the host
are described on
this page
.
3. Potential host researchers in Japan (particle theory and related fields)
Candidates are welcome to contact and discuss with multiple potential host researchers
to explore research directions and assess mutual fit.
At the application stage, however, JSPS accepts only one application per
candidate in a given recruitment round
(see the JSPS guidelines),
and each candidate must choose a single host researcher per recruitment round.
Below is a list of researchers who have kindly agreed to be listed here.
The list is not exhaustive; at present it mainly includes researchers
working in particle theory and related fields.
Please note that each researcher has their own policy, availability, and internal schedule.
